Different Types of Colloids

A colloid is a mixture that is  actually heterogeneous but appear to be homogeneous as the particles are uniformly spread throughout the solution, eg :- milk, shaving cream, cheese etc. Colloidal solution are also called Colloidal  sols.

Different Types of Colloids:

A colloid consists of a dispersed phase surrounded by a dispersion medium. Colloids are classified according to the state (Solid, liquid and gas) of dispersed phase and dispersion medium.

Type of Colloid Dispersed Phase Dispersion Medium Examples
Solid Sol Solid Solid Milky glass, coloured gemstones
Sol Solid Liquid Milk of magnesia, mud
Aerosol Solid Gas Smoke, industry exhaust
Gel Liquid  Solid Jelly, butter, cheese
Emulsion Liquid Liquid Milk, face cream
Aerosol Liquid Gas Fod, cloud, mist
Foam Gas Solid Sponge, foam, rubber
Foam Gas Liquid Shaving cream
